Sandy’s Definition of Instructional Design and Technology

I think the term instructional design AND technology is appropriate to our field. Why?

I believe when appropriate design meets content, solid instruction can then take place. Content knowledge, a delivery plan as well as plans for pre and post-assessment should enable an instructor to select effective vehicle(s) (i.e., piece(s) of technology/technologies) that will enhance learning and student achievement. During all phases of the learning process, an instructor should strive to monitor, adjust, and make any necessary changes that will support learners. Technology can be thought of as a medium to facilitate situations for students and teachers to interact and collaborate with peers from around the globe. Technology should not drive the content; it should be viewed as an additional resource to foster student success and to provide opportunities otherwise unavailable to the learner.
