Just Call 'Em Super Heros!

I found the above chart at Mind Tools. I thought it a concise explanation regarding how the maturity level of a group should help guide the response by the project manager.

The Hersey-Blanchard Situational Leadership Theory states that accurate assessment of groups or individual group members should shape the project manager’s leadership style. Based on this premise, it would be important for a project manager to have an idea of the skill set of the team. In this way, the PM (project manager) would at have a general idea of best practices. It appears best to keep in mind that one size does not fit all. Our text states “...to treat all situations and all people exactly the same will results in your handling some situations effectively and others ineffectively.” Other considerations in a project such as this would be communicating frequently with team members (our text used the phrase “make it crystal clear”), communicating with end users, facilitating positive a work situation, all while maintaing a sense of humor, providing enough guidance to be supportive but not overbearing while not appearing to neglect the project or team members, all while keeping the goal in mind AND keeping the client happy, on track and on budget.

With these factors in mind, it appears that all project managers should be issued capes with the letter “S” emblazoned on them....it appears to me you would have to be a superman or superwoman to experience success on all these fronts!

  1. Excellent presentation of the models. You confirm my conviction that formative evaluation is the best way to find the glitches, rather than always waiting until after the lesson is finished.

  2. Thanks Yvonne...I think if we wait to the end for all evaluation, small flaws may have turned into big flaws. On top of that, if flaws were corrected within each stage before preceeding, I wonder if subsequent flaws would have occurred or appeared to such a degree. Does this make sense? To me, it's akin to a snowball rolling down a hill...it just gets bigger and harder to deal with as time goes on.
